Capacitive level sensors
Capacitive level sensors are widely used in industrial applications to measure the level of liquids or bulk solids in containers, tanks, or silos. These sensors operate based on the principle of capacitance, which changes in response to variations in the level of the material being measured.

An Overview
Capacitive level sensors are an excellent choice for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. They offer precision, reliability, and flexibility across multiple industries.

How capacitive level sensors work
1. Basic principle of capacitance
Capacitance is the ability of a system to store an electric charge. A capacitor consists of two conductive plates separated by an insulating material (called a dielectric). The capacitance is determined by the distance between the plates and the type of dielectric material.
2. Sensing mechanism
In a capacitive level sensor, the material being measured acts as the dielectric medium between two electrodes. As the level of material changes, the dielectric constant between the electrodes also changes, which in turn changes the capacitance.
The sensor detects this change in capacitance and correlates it with the level of material in the tank or container.
3. Measuring liquid levels
For liquids, the sensor can be immersed in the material or mounted on the outside of a non-conductive container. The capacitance increases as the liquid rises between the electrodes, enabling the sensor to determine the level.
4. Measuring solid or powder levels
Capacitive sensors can also measure the levels of bulk solids like grains, powders, and plastics. The dielectric constant of these materials is typically lower than liquids, but the sensor still detects changes in capacitance as the level fluctuates.
