Absolute pressure sensors
Absolute pressure sensors are devices that measure the pressure of a fluid (liquid or gas) relative to a perfect vacuum (zero pressure). Unlike gauge pressure sensors, which measure pressure relative to the ambient atmospheric pressure, absolute pressure sensors provide a measurement that is independent of environmental factors like altitude or weather conditions.
Absolute pressure sensors – customised products to meet your requirements
An absolute pressure sensor is designed to measure the difference from the ideal or absolute vacuum. This is why the measurement is affected by external factors such as weather or altitude. Therefore absolute pressure sensors are used for the measurement of pressure in both closed systems and for the determination of height or water depth. Are you looking for high-quality absolute pressure sensors? We at All Sensors offer you outstanding solutions in the field of VK: sensor technology and are also happy to customise them to your individual requirements.

What are absolute pressure sensors?
Absolute pressure sensors are designed to measure the pressure of a fluid or gas relative to a perfect vacuum. These sensors are essential in a variety of industries, including aerospace and environmental monitoring, where accurate pressure measurements are crucial. They help ensure the reliable operation of systems by providing precise data needed for performance optimization and safety. Modern absolute pressure sensors come in different forms and types, catering to specific application needs and environmental conditions. By offering unparalleled accuracy and reliability, these sensors continue to play a pivotal role in advancing technology and enhancing operational efficiency across multiple sectors.
How absolute pressure sensors work
In general, pressure sensors are designed to perform measurements in relation to a reference pressure. Absolute pressure sensors utilise the pressure of a perfect vacuum (absolute zero) as a reference point. In an absolute pressure sensor, the airless chamber (vacuum) is located on one side, with the process pressure on the other. The change in pressure causes the membrane in the sensor to deform. The measurement of the absolute pressure – the difference between process pressure and vacuum – is then based on the degree of deformation of the membrane.
A sensor that quantifies the difference between the process pressures and the air pressure is referred to as a relative pressure sensor. A differential pressure sensor, on the other hand, measures two opposing pressures.
Absolute pressure sensors – areas of application
Absolute pressure sensors are generally able to measure the pressure of any gas or liquid under pressure. They are mainly used in areas where it is imperative to use accurate measurements with an absolute zero point (vacuum) as a reference.
An absolute pressure sensor is the only sensor that can determine barometric pressure because its measurements are free of air pressure fluctuations. This is also why they are used to determine water depth. It is also used to calculate altitude, based on the change in air pressure as altitude changes.
Areas in which they are used include:
- Oil and gas industry
- Chemical and petrochemical industry
- Metal processing industry
- Medical technology
- Industrial technology
- Building technology
- Device technology
- Household technology
- Production engineering
- Laboratories and research institutes
The advantages of absolute pressure sensors
- Accuracy: As already explained in detail, absolute pressure sensors are not affected by fluctuations in air pressure. This means that they are capable of particularly accurate measurements.
- Long-term stability: Although absolute pressure sensors are often perceived as more expensive than relative pressure sensors, they are widely regarded as a solid and, above all, durable investment due to their high long-term stability.
- High level of repeatability: Absolute pressure sensors are able to achieve consistent results under the same conditions and therefore have a low error rate.
