Sensor technology refers to the use of various sensors to collect precise environmental information. A sensor records physical, chemical or biological variables or substances. The measured variable serves as an input signal. It is transformed by physical or chemical effects according to a fixed relationship into an output variable that can be further processed, usually as an electrical signal. For example, one type of sensor utilises the piezoelectric effect to represent pressure in the form of an electrical charge. From the sensor, the output signal is passed on to a data processing unit. It is then available to other devices or systems to collect information about the environment or to make control decisions. The data is processed manually or, as is the case with most current sensors, by a digital data processing system.
